2008 Summer Real Hardbat Championship
Held @ the Rawreth Table Tennis Club 17th August 2008
Jayne’s 50 and Winner Andrew Halling and Runner up Ken Field
The Southend Executive Committee held their inaugural Meeting of the new Season in the form of a family barbeque. 19 attended and a great afternoon was had by all. Everyone brought food and we had a superb chef “Dave Calleja”.
After a short Committee Meeting, we celebrated Jayne Johnson’s 50th Birthday.
Then we got down to the “Real Hardbat Championships”: this was the brainchild of our Coaching and Development Officer, Dave Nunn; who organised the whole event and produced great prizes.
We all used the same 2 bats, which were wooden with no rubber whatsoever: everyone was on exactly the same level: these were “Real Hardbats”.
Round 1 saw Andrew Halling beat Taylor Nunn (9 years); Ken Field beat Barbara Halling; Dan Nunn beat cousin Mitchell Nunn; Dave Calleja beat Hayley Nunn; Maureen Cooper beat Julie Calleja; Sam Nunn (8) beat mum Tracy; Andy Nunn beat Bob Shingleton-Smith; Brian Cooper beat Sandy Field; Janet Finch beat Dave Nunn and Jayne Johnson had a bye.
Round 2 saw Dan Nunn beat Maureen Cooper; Andrew Halling narrowly beat Dave Calleja 13-11; Brian Cooper beat Jayne Johnson; Ken Field beat Andy Nunn and Janet Finch beat Sam Nunn.
In the Quarter Finals we reintroduced into the competition (in big brother style) 3 earlier losers – Dave Calleja, Hayley Nunn and Maureen Cooper. Andrew Halling beat Maureen Cooper; Dave Calleja beat Janet Finch; Dan Nunn beat sister, Hayley and Ken Field beat Brian Cooper
In the Semi Finals Ken had a very close game with grandson, Dan Nunn winning 13-11, whilst in the other Semi Final Andrew again beat Dave Calleja: although without doubt these 2 players were the best players and proved that whatever bat they use; the Premier players are the best.
In the Final, Ken went into an early 5-2 lead, but gradually Andrew took control to win 11-8; well done Andrew.
Special thanks go to the organiser, Dave Nunn, who was his usual witty self and his wife Tracy who umpired nearly every game.
Thanks also go to all the ladies who helped throughout: Sandy Field, Jayne Johnson, Maureen Cooper, Janet Finch, Julie Calleja and Barbara Halling.
And of course, that superb chef “Dave Calleja”
