Following on from recently winning the Division 2 Table Tennis title in the National Junior League (London North) the Southend Juniors were triumphant again this tIme winning the Essex Junior Interleague title in Harlow at the weekend.

The competition was open to all leagues in Essex and each team consisted of 4 juniors. Southend and District Table Tennis League representative team consisted of Sam Langton(13), Owen Warren(14), Sam Chesher(15) and Leon Smart(16). There were a number of leagues who were unable to get a team together and subsequently pulled out of the competition which resulted in 4 teams competing to be crowned Essex Champions.

Each team had to list their players in ranking order and the 1 and 2 ranked players played both the oppositions 1 and 2 players together with a doubles match. The same applied for players ranked 3 and 4. Whilst the other leagues may have provided some hard opposition for the 2 highest ranked players it soon became obvious that the other teams did not have the strength in depth as Southend and notably Sam Chesher and Leo Smart won all of their 6 singles each and their 3 doubles.

Southend came into the crucial final match against Clacton with both teams having identical records of having won both their previous games 10-0 and 8-2. With the match score level at 1-1 discussion took place as to what would happen if the result ended up with a 5 all draw. However, this hypothetical question soon became irrelevant as the Southend Juniors took hold of the match and ended up eventual 9-1 winners.
