|News Item #92: Mens Interleague Rep tournament|
|Date: 25th April 2009|
Southend today won the interleague rep tournament played over two days.
The first day’s play took place some weeks ago and Duncan Taylor Kevin Read and Charles Sweeney did all the hard work to leave us in a good commanding performance by winning both their matches.
Today was the second day and Minda Sinkus Charles Sweeney and Dave Calleja were the three who beat Clacton 8-2 and lost 4-6 to Braintree but this was enough to win the title by one point. Charles won all 3 against Clacton and Minda and Dave lost to Gary Young but won the other two. The pair of Chas and Minda lost the doubles after being in the lead.
This left Southend needing four points to secure the title as three points would make it all square with Braintree needing a count back to determine the final placings. Minda beat Jon Hill and then surpassed himself by beating Steve Kerns 3-0. Then Dave beat Jon Hill. One more point required. But Charles was unlucky losing all 3 and it was now all down to the doubles. Minda and Charles stepped forward against Kevin Gowlett (won all 3) and Jon Hill. Southend were in front but Braintree pulled it back to 2-2.
But Southend got off to a flier in the fifth going 5-0 ahead and eventually pulled away to win the title. Well done to all especially the players of the first match who set up the win with an awesome display.
