Ray Elsdon 1943-2009

With great sadness, I have to report that Ray Elsdon passed away on Saturday 12th September following a brief illness.

Ray was introduced to table tennis in about 1961 by Don Baker  and played for the Pitsea British Legion team in the Basildon League. He subsequently joined St Peters sometime between 1966 and 1971, when I first met him, and in due course played regularly in both leagues.

Ray was always a good sportsman, with a great sense of humour and always ready to help anyone. He has played to Premier division standard in both the Basildon and Southend leagues. He played for Basildon in Inter League VETS and SuperVETS,  in the Essex games, in the challenge match against Basildon's French twin town, for Benfleet against Romainville in France and, Castlepoint against Lovenich, in Germany.

No longer will we hear the familiar "Rats" as he lost a point he felt he should have won, or "Bad Luck", with the inevitable chuckle, as the ball just dropped off the net or clipped the edge of the table, as it often seemed to, to his benefit.

May I convey sincere condolences to his wife, Jacky, on behalf of The Southend and District Table Tennis League.
