Following the end of the 2008/2009 Table Tennis season, Owen Warren (Legra Table Tennis club) and Sam Langton (RawrethTable Tennis Club) were invited to represent Essex for the first time in a mini tournament played in Barnet, Hertfordshire. They were initially scheduled to play against Hertfordshire and Norfolk but Norfolk had to withdraw and a London representative team stepped in as replacements.

Two teams (Junior and Cadet) from Essex, Hertfordshire and London were scheduled to play each other. Whilst Owen and Sam were expecting to play in the U15 Cadet Team, they were both asked to play in the U18 Junior Team. Each team consisted of five players (3 boys and 2 girls).

The first match was played against Hertfordshire Juniors which Essex won 8-2 with both boys managing to record their first ever win for their county. Essex then went on to win all of their remaining matches beating London Cadets 7-3, Hertfordshire Cadets 9-1and London Juniors 6-4.Owen eventually winning 4 of his 6 matches and Sam winning 5 of his 8 matches.

Sam and Owen are school friends both attending Southend High School for Boys and the call up to play in this county friendly was just rewards for a season of hard work. They both travel to Harlow two nights per week to be trained by two former England number 1's, Natalie Green and Gareth Herbert and they also attend various other coaching programs and tournaments throughout the country receiving training from the legendary Desmond Douglas. Both boys were members of the successful Southend and District Table Tennis Team who won the National Junior League Div 2 and are the Essex Interleague champions. Owen is the districts U18 boys champion and Sam is the current U15 champion. A proud day for the boys and the local Southend League.
